Namgyalma – The Crowned Mother Buddha
Namgyalma Buddha Statue: Namgyalma Buddha the victorious hair or crowned mother Buddha. Namgyalma is a female Bodhisattva with three faces and eight arms and one of the three reverend deities of longevity. Her middle face and eight arms are white, symbolizing the elimination of disasters. There is an eye on each side of her forehead and a coronal is twisting around her painted on her crown. As required by the sutra of measurements for the construction of statues, this mother Buddha should be molded as a maiden of 16 years old. Half of hair should be braided with the remaining hair hanging down and the tip being longer than her elbows. Her face should resemble sesame and her eyes red lotus petals. The yellow face on the left side symbolizes benefit and longevity and the blue face on the right side symbolizes the defeat of devils.
According to the Buddhist scriptures, the followers who practices Buddhism should regard the victorious hair Crowned Mother Buddha as a female Bodhisattva who rids of miseries and disasters. Practicing her dharma can help lengthen their span of life, increase their happiness and wisdom, eliminate their sins and shield them from evil omen.
Gesture and Attributes
The mother Buddha is depicted white in color with three faces; white, yellow and blue like shown in this Namgyalma Buddha Statue. The central white face has a frowned, the yellow face on the right is peaceful and the blue face on the left side is fierce. She has eight hands in in total; four right and four left. On the right side; the first hand is shown holding Vishwa Vajra (Double Dorje) scepter, the second hand is shown in gesture of supreme generosity, the third hand is holding an arrow and the fourth hand is holding Buddha Amitabha in the upraised hand. On the left side, her first hand is holding lasso (rope), while her second hand is grasping a bow and her third hand is holding long-life vase an Amrita- Kalash with a flower in bloom and the fourth hand is shown as gesture giving protection.
She wears ornaments, jewels and silk garments of peaceful deity seated in the Vajra posture with right leg over the left, atop a flat white moon disc above a multicolored lotus blossom. The legs are in the posture know as royal ease or playfulness, with the right either raised or extended and the left leg drawn in.
About this Namgyalma Buddha Statue
This sculpture is a beautiful depiction of Namgyalma Buddha. Expertly cast from copper alloy using lost wax method; the statue has been submitted to an oxidation process to yield a rich and sensuous finish. The Namgyalma Buddha sits regally upon a single lotus throne, expressing a graceful and dignified presence. This sculpture was individually handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master artisans of the Shakya clan who are considered among the best in the world. These craftsmen are the modern heirs to a centuries-old tradition of creating sacred art for use in temples and monasteries.
